Durability 90%

Control - Score: 95

Thanks to the combination of the relatively stiff polyester material and the four-sided string design, the Solinco Hyper-G offers an outstanding amount of control. It’s ideal for advanced players looking to tame their high-powered game. Even at a slightly lower tension, we felt fully in control of the ball and rarely found ourselves hitting past the baseline.

After two-three weeks or so, we did notice a slight drop in tension, which obviously affected the amount of control the string offers, though we found the drop to be subtle enough that it didn’t affect our game too much.

Power - Score: 64

It’s no surprise that a control oriented string like the Solinco Hyper-G is also rather low-powered, which in this case is a good thing. This string is designed for big hitters who can already generate all their own pace and instead need more spin and control in their game. Perhaps the only downfall of the Solinco Hyper-G is that it’s a little too underpowered for beginners.

That being said, the Solinco Hyper-G still offers a decent amount of power, especially when compared to similar strings. At no point did we really feel like we were struggling to put the point away and we still got plenty of pop on our serves, even when using the thicker 16 Gauge version of the string at 55 lbs.

If, however, your style of tennis doesn’t give you easy access to power, you could certainly try playing with a thinner string gauge and dropping the tension while maintaining a very high level of control and spin.

Spin - Score: 93

The Solinco Hyper-G is often considered one of the best tennis strings for spin, and we can see why! Thanks to its four edges, it really gets a bite on the ball and provides easy access to spin.

Even as a relatively flat hitter myself, I still had no problem generating spin on my groundstrokes. And thanks to its relatively low power, I was also able to hit through the ball a little more and really swing at it without the fear of hitting past the baseline. As for the backhand slice, I noticed a little extra bit on the ball which really helped me keep the ball low and stay aggressive when chipping the ball back. It also makes it really easy to get a little extra bite on serve. If you’re a fan of a slice serve or a really heavy kicker, you’ll love the Solinco Hyper-G.

Feel - Score: 89

The string felt soft enough that it was easy on the arm and delivered a crisp feel, while still being firm enough to provide plenty of control and responsiveness. Even when strung at a higher tension, it still seemed fairly soft when compared to other co-poly strings, and seemed to produce a decent amount of ball pocketing.

It’s also a rather forgiving string when it comes to miss-hits. Despite a slightly loss of power, which would be expected, hitting off centre never felt massively uncomfortable and still resulted in a fairly well controlled shot.

Comfort - Score: 86

As far as co-polyesters go, the Solinco Hyper G is one of the more comfortable strings to play with. It’s a  slightly softer string which is easier on the arm, making it a great option for any players who suffer from arm and wrist injuries but just can’t bring themselves to play with anything other than a co-poly. Even when testing a 16 gauge version of the string at a high tension, we never felt any discomfort and found it to be quite forgiving if hitting slightly off-centre.

It’s also worth knowing that Solinco also produce a softer version of this string. The Solinco Hyper-G Soft offers a little extra comfort while still performing very similarly to the original version, which is a great alternative for players with arm problems.

Playability Duration - Score: 83

Thanks to its monofilament structure, the Solinco Hyper-G is also great at maintaining its tension and performance over time. Personally, we found the string’s performance to remain pretty consistent for around three weeks before needing a restring. The amount of spin we were able to produce with the string was great the whole time we played with it, though we did notice that the strings seemed to get a little looser and becoming a little more powerful towards the end. As you’d expect, that meant losing a little control, though it wasn’t as drastic a drop in performance as we’ve seen with other co-poly strings.

Durability - Score: 90

C-poly strings are generally great from a durability perspective and the Solinco Hyper-G is no exception. In fact, the string is so durable that we were comfortably able to get three to four weeks of tennis out of a set of 16 Gauge Solinco Hyper-G, playing two or three times a week. At that stage, we chose to cut the string out, though it was still fine to use for longer. We’d actually suggest going with a slightly thinner gauge, as it will offer a little extra comfort and better performance while not really losing out much on the durability of the string.

Price

When it comes to price, Solinco Hyper-G is excellent value for money. In the UK, a 12 metre set costs around £8-10 and a 200 metre reel costs approx. £110, which makes it a fairly well priced string when compared to other high performance co-polyester strings. In the US, sets go for around $12 and 200 metre reels are available for around $160. And thanks to its popularity, Solinco Hyper-G is available at most online tennis stores.

Verdict - Who Is This String For?

This string is designed for big hitters and it’s safe to say that Solinco have hit the mark! It offers a fantastic all round feel, providing a balance of control and power while still remaining a relatively soft string when compared to other edged polyester strings. It’s perfect for any advanced players and, in particular, developing juniors who are looking to strike the ball big but want to keep their shots under control.

Overall, we’re happy to say the Solinco Hyper-G is quickly becoming one of our favourite tennis strings!

"Solinco Hyper-G is one of the best tennis strings on the market. It's perfect for big hitters looking for a durable poly that offers a great combination of spin and control".

Compared to Similar Strings

Solinco Hyper-G is without a doubt one of the best edged polyester strings on the market. When compared to similar four sided strings, such as the Tecnifibre Black Code 4S or the Volkl V-Square, we’d say the Solinco Hyper-G feels like a more all rounded string. They all performed very well from a spin and control perspective, but we felt that the Solinco Hyper-G offered a little more power.
